Make Your Carbon Action Count

Australians are taking 'voluntary action' on climate change independent of the federal government in many ways. They are buying GreenPower and carbon offsets, installing rooftop solar and using energy more efficiently. However we have to be sure that under the federal government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS), all of these important actions will be counted extra to the efforts undertaken by industry sectors covered by the CPRS.

Under the amended CPRS the Rudd Government and Turnbull led Opposition agreed to do this. But now the CPRS is unlikely to become law. So your carbon action is even more important. And we need to make sure any future CPRS does not sterilise your carbon action.

Support Electronic Waste Recycling

After years of campaigning by the community and TEC and with over 168 million items of e-waste in or on their way to landfill, Australia's Environment Ministers have agreed to a national TV and computer recycling program. Now we have to make sure it is as extensive and effective as possible.

We'll be campaigning to include batteries, compact fluorescent lights, mobile phones, MP3 players, DVDs. As well, we will be pushing in negotiations with industry and government on maximising the number of drop-off centres and kerbside collections; tough mid-term targets for manufacturers; and rigorous recycling standards.

Protect Our Rivers from Coal Mining

Coal mining is wrecking streams and wetlands in Sydney's pristine drinking water catchments; draining and diverting rivers in the Hunter Valley; undermining streams on the Central Coast; and threatening groundwater basins under the Liverpool Plains.

As one of the first groups to raise the alarm we've been campaiging to save the rivers. You can help.

  • Write to the NSW Premier and Planning Minister asking them to protect rivers and swamps from underground coal mining. The latest mine plans are: Ashton Coal Mine realignment of Bowman Creek and subsidence (Hunter Valley); Bulli Extension affecting 40 streams and 200 wetlands (southern water catchments); East Bargo under 3 river gorges (Upper Nepean Conservation Area).      Use our on-line form to write a letter to the NSW Government: emailButton Protect Our Rivers from Coal Mining
